Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Counters President Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston
The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, indicated that the municipality was ready for a dispute with US President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament matches from Gillette Stadium, situated 22 miles southwest of Boston.
Mayor Wu appeared on a local podcast this week to respond to comments from the White House, which had described her as "radical left." Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."
Much of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can change it.
Wu added, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."
She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting what Boston stands for." Wu concluded by emphasizing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."
Trump's Statements and FIFA Role
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to the president as presents.
Earlier, President Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being burned. He responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of FIFA, who's great."
He added, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, saying, "Their mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Previous Threats and 2026 World Cup Details
Trump has made previous comments that he would have the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is planned to be played from June 11 to July 19 next summer.
