The former director has maintained his innocence regarding the allegations

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's lawyer filed the response representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for various factors including that his the accused, a opponent of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was charged just days after the former president pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Judicial Process

In court on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they aimed to present multiple petitions to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was improperly assigned to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's case was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under influence from Trump after his investigation into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the court on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the court recite his rights and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.

Historical Information

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey caused a backlash from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors claim Mr Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he provided false information to the Senate by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to release to news outlets details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, hinder and slow" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and charged Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have known for considerable time that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against James Comey surfaced after Trump published on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
